The Shopify App Partnership Framework
A simple end-to-end model: recruit, onboard, attribute, reward, retain. The backbone of everything else in this handbook.
Getting Started · ~6 min read
Everything in this handbook hangs off one simple loop. A partner program is five stages, and a weakness in any one of them caps the whole thing.
1. Recruit
Find people who already influence merchant app decisions — agencies, freelancers, consultants, creators, and your own happy customers — and get them to join. Recruitment is targeted outreach, not a 'become an affiliate' link buried in your footer.
2. Onboard
Turn an approved partner into an active one. Give them their link, tell them exactly what to do first, and hand them assets they can actually use. The goal is a first action in the first week.
3. Attribute
Connect an install back to the partner who drove it — via tracked links, direct App Store links, or manual assignment for referrals that happen off-platform. This is the hardest and most important stage for apps specifically.
4. Reward
Pay partners fairly and on time, with a clear record. Recurring revenue share, fixed per-install, or a hybrid — plus receipts both sides can keep for their books.
5. Retain
Keep good partners engaged and win back dormant ones. This is where compounding happens: your tenth month of a partner relationship should be more productive than your first.
Read the stages as a funnel. If you recruit 50 partners but only 5 get onboarded, fix onboarding before recruiting more. If installs happen but you can't attribute them, no amount of recruiting helps.
Practical checklist
- ✓Recruit: a target list of partner types and a channel to reach each
- ✓Onboard: a welcome flow that ends in a first action
- ✓Attribute: at least one reliable way to credit an install
- ✓Reward: a commission model and a payout method
- ✓Retain: a cadence for checking in with active partners
Common mistakes
- ✕Over-investing in recruitment while onboarding and attribution leak
- ✕Skipping retain — treating the program as acquisition-only
