Introduction
What this handbook covers, who it's for, and how to use it to build a partner program that actually drives installs.

On this page
This handbook exists because running a partner program for a Shopify app is different from running an affiliate program for a normal SaaS or a DTC brand. Your product installs through the App Store. Your revenue flows through Shopify's billing. Your best partners are agencies, freelancers, and consultants who already touch dozens of merchants. Generic affiliate advice doesn't map cleanly onto any of that.
Who this is for
Shopify app founders — usually a small team or a solo founder — who want installs from people other than paid ads and App Store search. If you've ever thought 'agencies keep recommending my app but I have no way to reward them,' this is written for you.
What it covers
The full lifecycle of a partner program: deciding whether you're ready, designing commissions that don't wreck your margins, recruiting the right partners, onboarding them so they actually promote you, attributing installs honestly, paying partners without a spreadsheet nightmare, and reading the few metrics that tell you if it's working.
How to use it
You don't need to read it front to back. If you're starting from zero, follow Getting Started, then Program Design, then Getting Your First 10 Partners. If you already have partners and just need attribution or payouts fixed, jump straight to those sections. Chapters marked 'Coming soon' are being written — the framework and the launch chapters are enough to stand up a real program today.
Throughout, we're honest about what's hard. Partner programs are a compounding channel, not a growth hack. The founders who win are the ones who treat ten good partners like ten relationships, not ten rows in a table.
Practical checklist
- ✓You have a live Shopify app with at least a handful of paying merchants
- ✓You can name one agency or consultant who has recommended your app
- ✓You've decided partner installs are worth a share of the revenue they drive
- ✓You have a way to see which stores installed (Partner API or webhook access)
Common mistakes
- ✕Treating a partner program as 'set up once and forget' — it's a relationship channel
- ✕Copying a DTC affiliate playbook that assumes coupon codes and one-time purchases
- ✕Launching before you can actually attribute an install to a partner
FAQ
Do I need a big audience or budget to start?+
No. The first ten partners come from relationships and outreach, not ad spend. Most app founders start with agencies and consultants who already recommend them.
Affiliate program or partner program — what's the difference?+
For an app, they blur together. See 'Affiliate vs Partner vs Agency vs Referral Programs' — the short version is that your highest-value partners rarely behave like classic affiliates.
