Is Your App Ready for a Partner Program?
Practical guidance on is your app ready for a partner program? for Shopify app founders.

A partner program amplifies whatever you already have. If merchants love your app and stick around, partners pour fuel on a fire. If they install and churn, partners just help you burn money faster. So the honest first question isn't 'how do I launch a program' — it's 'is my app ready for one.'
Green lights — you're ready
- •Merchants stay. If your referred stores would keep paying, recurring commissions are safe and partners see steady earnings.
- •You can attribute an install. You have Partner API or webhook visibility into which stores installed — without that, a program is guesswork.
- •Someone already recommends you. An agency, a consultant, or a happy customer has pointed a merchant your way at least once.
- •Your margins survive a share. You've done the math and can pay 20–40% (or a fixed reward) without going underwater.
Red lights — wait
- •High early churn. If merchants leave in the first month, fix retention before paying partners to send more of them.
- •No attribution. If you can't tell which install came from whom, you'll pay the wrong people and demotivate the right ones.
- •No one to own it. A program is a relationship channel; if nobody has a few hours a week for it, it stalls.
The minimum viable readiness
You don't need scale. Plenty of app founders launch a program with a few dozen merchants. What you need is: a product people keep, a way to credit a referral, and the willingness to treat your first partners as relationships rather than rows. If you have those three, you're ready — start small and let it compound.
A note on timing
Earlier than you think is usually right, as long as attribution works. Partners are a slow-compounding channel: the relationships you build now pay off in six months. Waiting for 'enough' merchants often just delays the compounding.
Practical checklist
- ✓Referred merchants are likely to stay paying (acceptable early churn)
- ✓You can attribute an install to a source (Partner API or webhook)
- ✓At least one person has already recommended your app
- ✓Your margin survives a 20–40% share or a fixed per-install reward
- ✓Someone can own partner relationships, even a few hours a week
Common mistakes
- ✕Launching a program to paper over a retention problem
- ✕Paying partners before attribution works
- ✕Waiting for 'enough' merchants while the compounding clock doesn't start
How this works in PartnerDock
PartnerDock connects to the Shopify Partner API so you can see and attribute installs from day one, and it's free to start — so 'is my attribution ready' stops being a blocker. You can stand up a program with a handful of merchants and let it compound.

How many merchants do I need before starting a partner program?+
There's no threshold. What matters is retention and attribution, not merchant count. Many app founders start with a few dozen paying stores.
Should I fix churn first or launch the program first?+
Fix churn first. A partner program multiplies your retention — good or bad. Sending more merchants into a leaky funnel just costs you commission on stores that leave.
