Recruiting Technology Partners
Practical guidance on recruiting technology partners for Shopify app founders.

Technology partners are other Shopify apps and tools that serve the same merchants you do without competing with you. A shipping app and a returns app, a reviews app and an email app — they share customers, solve adjacent problems, and each has an audience of exactly the merchants the other wants. A good technology partnership puts your app in front of a warm, relevant audience through a company that has every incentive to make the recommendation work.
Who counts as a technology partner
Any app or tool whose users are your ideal merchants but whose product doesn't overlap with yours. The best fits are complementary — you're often installed together, or one naturally leads to the other. A subscriptions app and a loyalty app, a page builder and a reviews app: different jobs, same merchant, and a genuine reason to recommend each other. Avoid direct competitors, obviously, but also apps whose audience isn't really your merchant profile.
The forms a technology partnership takes
- •Referral / affiliate — they recommend you and earn a commission, the simplest and most measurable arrangement.
- •Cross-promotion — you feature each other to your respective audiences (in-app, newsletter, docs), often with no money changing hands.
- •Integration partnership — you build a real integration that makes both apps better, then co-market it. The deepest and stickiest form.
- •Bundle or co-marketing — joint content, a shared offer, a webinar, a 'recommended stack' listing.
How to pitch a technology partner
Lead with the mutual win, because a technology partner isn't motivated by a small commission — they're motivated by value for their own users and their own growth. Show that your app genuinely helps their merchants, that the audiences overlap, and that recommending you makes their product more useful, not less. The strongest pitch is specific: 'Your users constantly need X, which is exactly what we do — here's how a partnership helps your merchants and drives referrals both ways.'
When to build an integration first
The deepest technology partnerships are built on a real integration. If your apps genuinely work better together, building that integration gives you something concrete to co-market, a reason for both teams to stay invested, and a switching cost that keeps the partnership alive. It's more work than a referral link, so reserve it for partners where the merchant overlap and the product fit are strong enough to justify it.
Where to find them
Look at the apps your own customers already use (ask them, or look at common stacks), the App Store categories adjacent to yours, apps that show up alongside you in 'works well with' lists, and the founders you already know in the Shopify ecosystem. Warm intros between app founders are common and convert well — the Shopify app community is small and reciprocal.
Practical checklist
- ✓A shortlist of complementary (non-competing) apps whose users are your ideal merchants
- ✓Evidence of merchant overlap (common stacks, 'works well with' lists, customer input)
- ✓A pitch that leads with the partner's win, not your commission
- ✓A clear proposed form: referral, cross-promotion, or integration
- ✓For the best-fit partners, a plan for a real integration to co-market
Common mistakes
- ✕Pitching a commission to a company that's motivated by audience value, not affiliate income
- ✕Partnering with apps whose users aren't actually your merchant profile
- ✕Proposing a deep integration before you've validated the merchant overlap is real
FAQ
Do technology partners work on commission like affiliates?+
They can, but many are driven more by mutual audience value than by affiliate income. Cross-promotion and integrations (with or without commission) are often more compelling to another app company than a referral rate alone.
Should I build an integration with a partner app?+
Only when the product fit and merchant overlap are strong. A real integration is the deepest, stickiest form of technology partnership, but it's significant work — reserve it for partners where it clearly makes both apps more valuable to shared merchants.
