SaaS Affiliate Attribution: Why It Breaks, and How to Get It Right
Most SaaS affiliate tools credit the wrong partner because they guess. Here is why attribution breaks, and how to credit the affiliate who actually drove each signup.
Attribution is the whole job
An affiliate program lives or dies on one thing: crediting the partner who genuinely drove a signup, and only that partner. Get it right and affiliates trust your numbers and keep promoting you. Get it wrong and you get disputes, wrong payouts, and partners who quietly walk away.
For SaaS, attribution looks simple and usually is not. A visitor clicks an affiliate link, lands on your site, maybe leaves, comes back days later on another device, starts a trial, and converts to paid a month after that. Somewhere in that chain you have to decide which affiliate earned the commission.
Where most tools cut corners
The common shortcut is a last-click cookie. When someone converts, the tool looks for the most recent affiliate cookie in that browser and credits it. That works until the real world intervenes:
- The buyer converts on a different device than the one that clicked.
- Cookies are cleared, blocked, or expire before the trial converts.
- Two affiliates touched the same buyer, and the last click wins even if an earlier partner did the real work.
Every one of those credits the wrong partner, or no one. On a long SaaS sales cycle, the gap between the click and the paid conversion is exactly where cookie attribution falls apart.
The reliable version
Accurate SaaS attribution ties the referral to the account, not just the browser. The affiliate code should travel from the first click through to the signup record, so when the account later converts to paid, the commission resolves to the right partner no matter how long it took or how many devices were involved. Your billing system, Stripe or Paddle, already knows when that account pays. The job is to connect the signup to the affiliate deterministically and then let revenue flow against it.
We built PartnerDock to do exactly this for Shopify apps, where attribution is genuinely brutal: installs happen on Shopify's surfaces and revenue flows through Shopify's billing. Carrying the referral through that flow is the hard version of the problem, and it is what our customers run on today. The same rigor applies directly to general SaaS on Stripe and Paddle.
What to do next
If you are setting up or fixing a SaaS affiliate program, start by asking your tool one question: when an account converts to paid weeks after the click, how exactly do you know which affiliate to credit? If the answer is a last-click cookie, you will pay the wrong partner more often than you think.
