How to Set Up a SaaS Affiliate Program (Step by Step)

A practical guide to launching a SaaS affiliate program: commission model, tracking, terms, payouts, and recruiting your first partners, without taxing your own growth.

Start with the commission model

Before any software, decide what you pay for. The three common SaaS models are a recurring percentage of subscription revenue, a one-time bounty per paying customer, or a hybrid. Recurring rewards partners who send customers who stick, which is usually what you want for subscription SaaS. Whatever you choose, write down how long commissions last and when they stop.

Decide how you will track referrals

This is the part that quietly makes or breaks the program. You need to connect an affiliate's link to the account that eventually pays you, across a trial period and often across devices. Tie the referral to the signup record, not just a browser cookie, so a conversion weeks later still resolves to the right partner. If your tracking depends only on a last-click cookie, expect to miscredit a meaningful share of conversions.

Write terms partners can trust

Good affiliates read the fine print. Be clear about the rate, the cookie or attribution window, what counts as a qualified conversion, and when they get paid. One rule matters more than it looks: when you change a rate later, existing partners should keep the deal they signed up under. Rewriting terms retroactively is the fastest way to lose the affiliates who were working for you.

Set up payouts you can actually run

Decide the minimum payout, the schedule, and the method. The cleanest setup reads paid revenue straight from your billing system, Stripe or Paddle, calculates what is owed, and gives both you and the affiliate a clear statement. Manual spreadsheets work for a handful of partners and break the moment the program grows.

Recruit your first partners

Start with people already close to your product: happy customers, consultants and agencies in your space, and creators whose audience overlaps with your buyer. A small group of well-matched partners beats a large list of random sign-ups. Give them a clean portal, their link, and real-time visibility into what they have earned.

Avoid the growth tax

Most SaaS affiliate tools charge more as your affiliates drive more, either a percentage of tracked revenue or a jump to the next tier. Your program becomes a tax on a channel that is supposed to make you money. Look for flat pricing and no cut of your payouts, so a program that works does not quietly get more expensive every month.
